On the positive side this means that Nepal has already achieved the MDG goals for water supply and sanitation. However, the quality of service and the overall functionality of water supply systems does not meet the standards set by the Government of Nepal. To correct this situation and work towards a cohesive, harmonized water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector, the Government of Nepal in 2008 indicated its intent to move to a sector-wide approach (SWAp). The SWAp is a joint effort of all Government agencies, Development Partners, CSOs and other stakeholders working in WASH. It is coordinated by the Sector Stakeholder Group (SSG).  The initial outputs of this process are presented here.

The SEIU fulfills the role of Secretariat to the SSG activities. For an overview of its mandate and objectives click here.

Currently the SEIU is engaged in drafting a programme of work for a participatory and consultative process to develop a National WASH Sector Development Plan. The programme of work is undertaken since June 2013, and a complete draft document is expected to be availabe in August 2014.

The Sector completed the second Joint Sector Review during a stakeholder Conference on March 31 and April 1, 2014. The Review was enthusiastically carried by all stakeholders in field visits, thematic working group sessions and finally during the plenary sessions in the concluding Conference. A resolution was drafted that urged all stakeholders to commit themselves to working on implementation of critical sector policies and practice until the next JSR in 2016.

SEIU has been working with Kanchan Nepal to develop a pilot visualization of water supply schemes in Kaski District. SEIU aims to test whether data from its Bench Marking project or from rolling out the Operational Directives can be included.
